Introducing Season Three - MAPENDO WOMEN

Season Three is a celebration of all women. There are so many women across the globe who play a vital role in each and every one of our lives. MAPENDO, which means LOVE in Swahili, is the name of the cooperative in which this season’s offering was produced. The coop has 16 lots and 4,200 farmers. Season Three - Mapendo Women was produced solely by women farmers in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

Many of the women that produced Mapendo are widows as a result of the conflicts that have destabilized parts of the Democratic Republic of Congo. Gender justice is one of their key pillars and they’ve worked with organizations such as OXFAM to implement Gender Action Learning Systems. These systems comprise role playing and visual tools to help farmers plan their lives and sustainable livelihoods.

Mapendo provides revenue generating opportunities to the community and drastically reduces smuggling to Rwanda. It is a dangerous journey and many current farmers have personally experienced its risks and impact.” Mighty Peace Coffee

Perspective has evolved through the unmeasurable support from women across the globe. Anne Cooper, our Master Roastress consultant out of Melbourne Australia who taught us how to roast coffee from start to finish. She has given us the tools needed to become confident and consistent as a micro roastery in the coffee industry. Lee Safar, our coffee industry expert and business consultant out of Sydney Australia has played a pivotal role in a wide variety of small business management resources. Lee’s knowledge and interest in seeing our brand succeed has truly pushed Perspective years ahead. Sara Zuluaga Parodi, our Medellin Colombia coffee farmer, and fellow roaster has helped us understand coffee production from farm to cup. She has helped us understand the challenges of coffee cultivation and green defects while also providing us an opportunity to roast on a much larger 12kilo roaster. Lauren Smith, our in-house cupping specialist out of Alexandria VA, has played a major role in dialing in our coffee profiles while also providing unwavering support throughout Perspective’s journey. We thank you all for your help in getting Perspective Roasters where we are today…
